Power Systems
How electricity gets from where it is generated to the switch in your house. Generating stations, transmission lines, substations, transformers and the distribution network that reaches every street — and the protection equipment that disconnects a fault in a fraction of a second, before it burns something down.
What you would actually study

What the work is like
Substations, lines and plants rather than offices — testing and commissioning equipment, taking readings, attending to faults and outages, and maintaining protection systems. Shift duty and night call-outs are normal.
It suits you if
Students who liked the electricity chapters in Physics, who are careful and rule-following — this is work where shortcuts injure people — and who want steady, essential work rather than fashionable work.
The honest part
Live electrical work is dangerous, and the discipline about isolation, earthing and permits that feels excessive in class is precisely what keeps people alive. Much of this sector is government — KPTCL, the ESCOMs, the railways and PSUs — which means entry is usually through a competitive recruitment exam rather than a campus interview, and waiting for a notification can take time. Start preparing for those exams in your second year, not after you finish.

Industrial Automation
Making a factory run itself. Instead of an operator pressing buttons in sequence, a programmable controller reads sensors, decides what to do and drives the motors and valves, with a screen showing the state of the whole plant. This specialisation teaches the controllers, the wiring and the logic behind that.
What you would actually study
- Programmable logic controller programming — ladder logic, inputs and outputs, timers and counters
- SCADA and operator screens — how a plant is watched and controlled from one place
- Sensors and transducers — how a machine knows position, level, temperature and pressure
- Control panels and motor control circuits — starters, contactors, relays and interlocks
- Variable frequency drives and power electronics — controlling motor speed
- Control Systems — feedback, stability and closed-loop control
- Electrical Machines and industrial drives
- Pneumatics and hydraulics, which most automated plant also uses
What the work is like
Panel building and wiring, writing and modifying controller programs, commissioning a machine on the customer's floor, and being called when a line stops. Travel to customer sites is normal in the systems-integration side of this trade.
It suits you if
Students who like electrical work but want the logic and programming side as well, and who enjoy fault-finding — a stopped production line is a puzzle with people waiting on the answer.
The honest part
Automation is the part of the electrical trade that pays best at diploma level, but colleges vary hugely in whether they have working controllers, drives and panels or only slides about them. Check before you choose, and get hands-on time even if you have to take a short course outside. Commissioning also means travelling at short notice and very long days while a plant is being started up.

Renewable Energy
Generating electricity from sunlight and wind instead of fuel, and connecting it safely to the supply everyone else uses. In practice most of this work in Karnataka is solar: sizing a system for a roof or a plot, mounting the panels, wiring them to inverters and batteries or into the grid, and keeping them producing afterwards.
What you would actually study
- Non-conventional and renewable energy sources — solar, wind, biomass and small hydro, and where each makes sense
- Solar photovoltaic systems — cells, modules and arrays, and how output changes with sun and shading
- System sizing — matching panels, inverter and battery to an actual load
- Inverters, charge controllers and batteries — the power electronics and storage side
- Installation practice — mounting structures, cabling, earthing and lightning protection
- Grid connection and metering, including net metering arrangements
- Maintenance and fault-finding — why an installed system stops producing what it should
- Electrical Machines and Power Systems as the underlying subjects
What the work is like
Mostly on rooftops and open sites: survey and measurement, installation with a crew, wiring and commissioning, then service visits. Physical, outdoors, and frequently at height.
It suits you if
Students who want technical work in a field that is expanding rather than shrinking, who are comfortable outdoors and at height, and who are interested in energy as a subject rather than only as a job.
The honest part
The sector grows in cycles that follow policy and tariffs, so employment is less steady than a utility job even though the long-term direction is clear. Much of the work is done by small installation firms rather than large companies, which makes it one of the easiest technical fields to eventually enter on your own — but roof work carries real risk and fall-protection training is not a formality. Survey and customer skills matter here almost as much as wiring skill.

Electrical Drafting
Producing the drawings an electrical installation is built from — where every cable, switchboard, light point and earth pit goes, and how the whole supply is arranged on a single sheet. An electrician wires what these drawings say and an estimator counts material from them, so they have to be right.

- Electrical drawing and CAD — symbols, conventions and drawing to standard
- Wiring diagrams and single-line diagrams — showing an installation both in detail and in summary
- Panel and switchboard layouts — arranging equipment inside an enclosure
- Electrical installation and wiring practice — what is being drawn, and the wiring rules it must satisfy
- Cable sizing and cable schedules — choosing conductors for load and length

What the work is like
Office work in a consultancy, a panel manufacturer or a contractor design cell, producing and revising drawings and coordinating them with the civil and mechanical drawings so that services do not clash on site.
It suits you if
Students who are neat and systematic, who enjoy the drawing side of electrical work, and who would rather work indoors than on site — though the best draughtsmen have spent real time on site first.
The honest part
Drafting on its own is treated as junior work and paid accordingly; combined with estimation, cable sizing and a genuine understanding of installation rules, it becomes a consultancy skill. This is also the electrical specialisation most exposed to being reduced to software operation, so learn why a drawing is the way it is, not only which commands produce it.
