Inside Electronics Mechanic Trade

Consumer Electronics
Repairing the electronics people have at home — televisions, audio systems, inverters, microwave ovens, washing machine controllers, chargers and small appliances. The skill is being able to open something you have never seen before, work out how it is meant to behave, and find the one component or connection that has failed.
What you would actually study
- Soldering and desoldering, including surface-mount components, done well enough not to damage the board
- Identifying and testing components — resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors and integrated circuits
- Using instruments — multimeter, oscilloscope, signal generator and regulated power supply
- Power supplies — rectifiers, regulators and switched-mode supplies, which are the most common source of failure
- Amplifiers and audio circuits
- Display and television circuits — power boards, backlight and signal sections
- Inverters, uninterruptible power supplies and batteries
- Systematic fault-finding — narrowing a fault by measurement rather than by replacing parts
What the work is like
Bench work in a service centre or your own shop, with customers waiting and a queue of units to get through. Part of the day is repair, and part is telling somebody honestly that their appliance is not worth fixing.
It suits you if
People with good hands and eyes for small work, curious enough to open things up, and able to deal with customers directly — in this trade the customer is usually standing in front of you.
The honest part
Two forces work against this trade and one strongly for it. Against: many products are now built to be replaced rather than repaired, and manufacturers do not release service information or spare parts freely. For: precisely because fewer people can do it, a genuinely good board-level repairer in a town has almost no competition and steady work. The people who do best combine repair with sales, installation and service contracts rather than relying on walk-in repairs alone.

Industrial Electronics
The electronics that run machines in a factory — the drives that control motor speed, the power devices that switch large currents, the control panels, and the sensors and relays that tie them together. When a machine misbehaves electrically, this is the person who works out whether it is the drive, the sensor or the wiring.
What you would actually study
- Power electronic devices and how they switch large currents
- Rectifiers, converters and inverters — converting and controlling power
- Variable frequency drives — wiring them, setting parameters and diagnosing faults
- Sensors used on machines — proximity, photoelectric, temperature and pressure
- Relays, contactors and control circuits, and reading a control diagram
- Control panel wiring and layout
- Programmable logic controller basics — inputs, outputs and simple logic
- Measuring instruments and systematic fault-finding on running plant
What the work is like
On the factory floor, inside panels and near running machinery — checking supplies, tracing signals, replacing drives and cards, and standing by at start-up after a repair. Shift work and breakdown call-outs come with it.
It suits you if
People who are analytical, careful around electricity, and comfortable being the person production is waiting for when a machine is down.
The honest part
This is one of the best-paid directions an electronics trade certificate can take, because a plant loses money for every hour a machine is stopped and will pay for somebody who shortens that. It also means pressure: you work under people who want the line running now, and the discipline to isolate properly rather than probe a live panel in a hurry is what keeps you safe. Manufacturers' training on specific drives and controllers is worth chasing, because much of the practical knowledge is equipment-specific.

Security Systems
Installing and maintaining the equipment that watches and controls a building — cameras and recorders, video door phones, access control and biometric readers, alarms and intercoms. Almost every shop, office, apartment building and school now has some of it, and all of it needs somebody to install, configure and repair.
What you would actually study
- Cameras and recorders — analogue and network cameras and the recorders they connect to
- Cabling and power — coaxial and network cable, connectors, and powering equipment over a long run
- Camera placement, field of view, focus and lighting, which decide whether footage is actually useful
- Network basics — addressing and configuration for network cameras and remote viewing
- Storage and retrieval — recording settings, retention, and exporting footage when it is needed
- Access control, biometric readers, electric locks and video door phones
- Alarm and intercom systems
- Fault-finding — cameras that drop out, poor images, and recorders that quietly stopped recording
What the work is like
Customer premises: surveying a site, running cable through ceilings and along walls, mounting and aiming cameras, configuring the recorder, and returning for service. Ladder work, drilling, and a great deal of explaining things to owners.
It suits you if
People who are practical and presentable, who can work inside somebody's shop or home without disrupting it, and who are willing to learn the networking side as well as the wiring.
The honest part
The equipment is cheap and easy to buy, so anyone can call themselves an installer, and a great many installations are done badly — cameras pointed at nothing useful, recorders that stopped months ago, nobody checking. Being the installer who surveys properly, labels the cabling and services the system afterwards is what turns this into a business rather than a day wage. It is increasingly a networking job as much as an electronics one, so learn networks seriously.

- Networking certification, so you can handle network cameras and remote access properly
- Add structured cabling and network installation, which the same customers need

Instrumentation
Looking after the instruments that measure what is happening inside an industrial process — the temperature, pressure, flow and level readings that operators and control systems depend on. If an instrument reads wrong, the plant makes wrong decisions, so this trade is about keeping measurement honest.
What you would actually study
- Sensors and transducers — thermocouples, resistance thermometers, pressure transmitters, flow meters and level devices
- The standard current loop and instrument signal wiring, which is the common language of industrial measurement
- Calibration — checking and adjusting an instrument against a standard, and recording what you did
- Instrument installation — impulse lines, mounting, cable glanding and junction boxes
- Reading loop diagrams and process and instrumentation drawings
- Controllers and control valves — the elements that act on a measurement
- Electronic measuring instruments and fault-finding within a loop
- Safe working practice in a plant — permits, isolation and precautions in hazardous areas
What the work is like
Plants that run continuously — refineries, chemical, cement, pharmaceutical, food and power. Routine calibration and checks, loop testing, and intense work during shutdowns when every instrument is attended to at once. Shift duty and call-outs are usual.
It suits you if
People who are meticulous, who like careful measurement and clean documentation, and who are willing to work in industrial plants that are often outside cities.
The honest part
Instrument work is quieter and cleaner than most trades and carries more responsibility than its title suggests, because a calibration you signed for is a record somebody will rely on. In regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals the paperwork genuinely matters as much as the adjustment, and people who resent documentation do not last. The trade travels well, since process plants everywhere use the same standards, and it is one of the ITI routes with the clearest path onward into a diploma and a supervisory role.
