- Passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, usually 60% in PCM and 50% in English. You must also pass a DG Shipping approved medical — including 6/6 eyesight and no colour blindness, which disqualifies some candidates regardless of marks.

Nautical Science
The deck side of a merchant ship — navigating it, handling it in and out of port, and taking care of the cargo it carries. Deck officers plan the passage, keep watch on the bridge, supervise loading so the ship stays stable, and are responsible for the safety of the ship and everyone on it.
What you would actually study
- Navigation — celestial, terrestrial and electronic
- Seamanship — ship handling, anchoring, mooring and cargo gear
- Cargo work — loading, stowage, securing and stability
- Ship construction and stability calculations
- Meteorology and oceanography
- Collision regulations and the rules of the road at sea
- Maritime law, ship documentation and marine communications
- Safety, firefighting, first aid and survival at sea
What the work is like
Watchkeeping on the bridge in shifts around the clock, cargo supervision in port, and safety and maintenance duties. Contracts run for months at a time, followed by a period of leave at home.
It suits you if
Students who want responsibility young, who can live and work with the same small group for months, and who are disciplined about procedure — at sea there is no one else to correct a mistake.
The honest part
The medical standards, particularly the requirement of good vision without colour blindness, disqualify some candidates however good their marks — get tested before spending anything on a course or coaching. Promotion runs through certificate of competency examinations rather than seniority, so your career depends on continuing to pass examinations. The earnings are real, and so is the isolation.

Marine Engineering
The engine side of a merchant ship — the main engine, generators, boilers, pumps, purifiers and every system that keeps the vessel moving and habitable. Marine engineers run and repair all of it at sea, with only the spares and tools carried on board and no possibility of calling someone in.
What you would actually study
- Marine internal combustion engines — the main engine and its auxiliaries
- Thermodynamics and heat engines
- Marine boilers and steam systems
- Marine auxiliary machinery — pumps, purifiers, compressors, refrigeration
- Marine electrical systems and control engineering
- Ship construction and the basics of naval architecture
- Fluid mechanics, hydraulics and workshop practice
- Engine room watchkeeping, maintenance and pollution prevention
What the work is like
Watchkeeping in the engine room and planned maintenance, with breakdown repairs whenever they happen. The engine room is hot, loud and confined, and the work is genuinely mechanical.
It suits you if
Students who liked machines and workshops, who are practical with their hands, and who are content to solve a problem with what is on board rather than what would be ideal.
The honest part
This is the branch that transfers best to shore work — power plants, marine equipment companies, ship management and surveying all hire experienced marine engineers, so a career at sea does not have to be permanent. As on the deck side, progress runs through certificate of competency examinations, and the sea time and study they require have to be planned for.

Naval Architecture
Designing and building ships and offshore structures. A naval architect works out the shape of a hull, how much it can carry, whether it will stay upright in a heavy sea, how strong its structure must be, and how it will be built in a yard. It is a shore-based engineering discipline rather than a sea-going one.
What you would actually study
- Ship geometry, hydrostatics and stability
- Ship resistance and propulsion
- Ship structures and strength
- Ship design and general arrangement
- Marine hydrodynamics, waves and motion in a seaway
- Materials, welding and shipyard production methods
- Computer-aided ship design and analysis
- Offshore structures, ocean engineering and classification rules
What the work is like
Design office work with calculation and modelling software, alongside periods in a shipyard checking that what was drawn is being built correctly.
It suits you if
Students with a strong engineering bent who are drawn to ships and the sea but want a design career on shore rather than a life at sea.
The honest part
Families often assume naval architecture is a sea-going merchant navy course. It is not — you design and build ships rather than sail on them, so it does not carry the sea-going earnings and does not require the sea-going medical standard. Employment is in shipyards, design consultancies, classification societies and the offshore industry, and it is concentrated in a few coastal cities.

Harbour & Logistics
The shore side of shipping — running ports and terminals, moving containers and cargo, handling customs and documentation, and organising the chain that takes goods from a factory to a ship to a shop. Nearly everything imported or exported passes through this work.

- Cargo handling, containerisation and terminal operations

- Multimodal transport and freight forwarding
- Customs procedures, documentation and export-import trade
- Maritime law and marine insurance

What the work is like
Operations and coordination: schedules, documents, clearances and problems that must be solved before a ship sails or a container misses its connection. Ports run continuously, so shifts are common.
It suits you if
Students who are organised, quick with paperwork and comfortable coordinating many people at once, and who want the shipping industry without years away from home.
The honest part
This is the shore career in shipping, and it suits people who want the industry without the sea — but pay starts lower than sea-going work and rises with experience and responsibility rather than with certificates. Its compensation is the widest exit of any specialisation here: logistics skills transfer to any company that moves goods, which is most of them.
